Everyday metal toxicity in food

Heavy metal toxicity is becoming increasingly prevalent in today’s society. Every day we are exposed to hundreds of toxic metals in our food, toiletries, cleaning products and in our environment. While the body requires small amounts of metal for nutritional purposes, high volumes resulting from constant exposure make it difficult for the body to process. As a result, heavy metals accumulate in the soft tissues and slowly poison the body’s systems.

In the world of natural healing, a more common approach to rid the body of heavy metal toxicity or any other health issue is to go on intense short term “Detox Programs”. However, I always recommend a “Detoxifying Lifestyle”. The following lifestyle changes are essential to not just remove unwanted excess metal from the body but also prevent it from being consumed in the first place.

The most commonly encountered heavy metals include aluminium, arsenic, cadmium, iron, lead, mercury and nickel. These mostly come from fertilizers and insecticides, tobacco smoke, metal containers including food cans, Aluminium foil, some pharmaceutical drugs , aerated drinks, margarine, refined flour and table salt often contain aluminium, cosmetics, hair products, antiperspirants containing aluminium (especially aerosol sprays), toothpaste, aluminium cookware and the list goes on and on.

Lifestyle Changes:

Use a water filter – A good quality water filter will help to remove chlorine and heavy metals. Wash your fruits and vegetables with filtered water to avoid any heavy metal residues.

Limit your intake of processed foods and refined foods – Refined and processed foods are a major source of metal poisoning,

Avoid canned foods – Canned foods can contain metals, especially if the cans have been damaged in some way.

Eat your essential fatty acids – Essential fatty acids such as flaxseed oil help to lessen the effect of metal poisoning on your brain.

Eat foods high in vitamin C and E – Vitamin C and E rich foods (citrus fruit, dark leafy greens, etc) help to leach out toxic metals from your body.

Eat foods high in selenium – Selenium also helps to leach toxic metals from your body. Brazil nuts are a great source of selenium.

Go organic! – Buy organically grown produce when you can.

Do not use aluminium cookware.

Read Labels on all products you buy and if you don’t understand it, look it up!

How to fix your digestion without prescription drugs

As ‘we are what we eat’ we are also what we digest. Our health depends to a large extent on how our digestive system functions in providing the building blocks for our physical body. It is not just a matter of what you put into your mouth but also how it is processed, metabolized, utilized  and excreted by the body.

You need to compliment the body not supplement it to digest effortlessly and naturally. So apart from tips to fix digestion it is important that you also try and prevent indigestion.

  • Chew properly: Digestion starts in the mouth. Not chewing well means that the stomach does not have time to secrete the digestive juices needed for its breakdown. Additionally, chewing well allows enzymes in the saliva to commence digestion before the food reaches the stomach.
  • Mix less: Foods that take approximately the same amount of time to be digested should be eaten together. For instance, you will want to avoid eating starches and proteins together. Proteins can be eaten with brown rice or with green, leafy vegetables. Fruits are best eaten alone. Vegetables may be eaten with grains or legumes.
  • Lime shot: if you feel indigestion once in a while due to heavy or bad food, drink the juice of a lime as a neat shot just post the meal.
  • Fenugreek seeds: if you feel indigestion, bloating and flatulence on a regular basis, soak 6 to 8 fenugreek seeds (also known as methi dana) overnight in a small bowl of water. Strain and drink only the water first thing in the morning on an empty stomach every day.

Over the counter pills work by absorbing acids in the stomach, unfortunately, they don’t discriminate between good and bad acids and absorb both. The good acids are already in short supply, so with medication absorbing these acids, the root problem is not addressed. Prescription drugs take it a step further and stop the production of essential enzymes all together.

Less enzymes and lower levels of good acids lead to incomplete digestion. Foods ferment and become toxic. Nutrients pass through the body without being absorbed.

The Truth: About Lifestyle Diseases

A very dear friend of mine is over weight and went for a routine check up to discover that she had High Blood Pressure (Hyper tension). She was stressed at work, and had no time to exercise or follow a healthy lifestyle. She ate out everyday from work but ordered the most expensive gourmet sandwiches, pastas, continental or Chinese with Diet Coke, she rarely ate heavy greasy Indian food. She knew she was over weight, but she thought by eating expensive continental food and avoiding greasy Indian she was being healthier than most.

When she went to meet her family doctor with the reports, I decided to go with her because I wanted to know how she was going to go about curing herself, it was my love and selfish motive to see her healthy that compelled me to go with her, It took 40 minutes of waiting in a crowded waiting area, till we were called in. After browsing through the reports for about a minute, and some polite conversation, the doctor put his pen to paper and as he was writing the prescription, these were his exact words “don’t worry beta, just cut out the fried and oily stuff, avoid salt and take this pill every morning and you will be ok. Whatever you do, make sure you take this pill every morning, you young girls these days have a lot of stress (chuckled), so this pill will keep the BP in control. Don’t worry, it’s all under control”

As we walked out, she had a huge smile on her face; she thought she had resolved her problem.

She had left the doctors office with no understanding of what was actually happening to her and why, all she knew was she has “High Blood pressure” and that to her meant exactly what the word spell out. She felt like she had to make no changes in her nutrition as she rarely ate greasy food. She also sheepishly admitted to me that she often binges on chocolates which she will cut down on. So in her head the combination of cutting down on chocolate and taking the pill for the rest of her life meant she was back to normal.

As I am a practicing Naturotherapist who cures through food, I was keen to see if she would listen to my take on High Blood Pressure. She saw the restlessness in my eyes, and giggled as she said “my dearest Sej, I know your methods are more correct, but its such a pain to eat only fruits and vegetables all the time, and I do eat them in my sandwich’s, but I cant take a risk of having High Blood Pressure, so I’m just going to take the pill, don’t worry, I will try and eat healthy too and cut down on the salt.”

What she does not realize is that Naturotherapy does not involve eating only fruits and vegetables, it is an entire lifestyle based on smart intelligent and informed choices.

I smiled to hide my helplessness, because I am believer in allowing people to make their own choices. And if they absolutely believe they know what’s right for them or are not even open to understanding their bodies, then so be it. I also believe everything happens for a reason, and even though I can’t help my friend, I believe this experience happened to me so I could share it with those who want to listen.

Today High Blood Pressure, diabetes, cholesterol and other lifestyle diseases are as common as a cold, and most people like my friend, believe that taking pills will cures them.

As a doctor of natural medicine I believe, continuous chemical intervention into a body’s natural processes has led to a host of complications and ailments. Western medicine looks to suppress symptoms and therefore works against the balancing forces of nature. That diarrhea, sneeze or rise in blood pressure is the body’s natural mechanism to cleanse or support itself but we continue to blindly suppress the symptoms whilst ignoring true root causes.

Furthermore our bodies are the most advanced pharmacies in the world but we callously supplement them rather than stimulate them to do the work they were designed to do. Our perception on our bodies is disempowering, we are made to believe that we do not have the ability to understand or comprehend the working of the body. The truth is that the answers actually lie within you; it’s a matter of tuning into your body as a way of life. The body has been created to perfection and carries out all functions flawlessly unless YOU disrupt it.

By disruption I mean, the type of lifestyles we lead. Today most of the food we eat is not wholesome, it is processed using chemicals to preserve and enhance taste, and its stripped of all its nutrients in the process, even the basics like Salt, rice, wheat and sugar are processed. To understand this better lets use my friend’s example; she believes she eats healthy by avoiding Indian greasy food, to an extent it helps, but what she doesn’t realize is that most restaurant food today is made using processed ingredients like poisonous refined salt, poisonous refined oils, MSG, taste enhancers, color enhancers, refined flour and refined sugar.

Refined Salt being of crucial essence here because what western medicine claims in reducing HBP, actually worsens it. IODIZED salt is bad for you and must be cut out. However to cure high blood pressure you need Salt, but natural salt (Rock Salt).

To add to this the Food & Beverages Industry has pumped the market with products like chips and soft drinks which are absolutely of no nutritional value but in fact severely damaging to the body. She believes that a Diet Coke will keep the calories in check, however it works just the opposite, as the chemicals used to manufacture coke or even worse diet coke are so toxic for the body, that it retains fat and water to dilute the water soluble and fat soluble toxins, thereby only adding weight.

With computers and internet, her need to move around has also decreased significantly, and she does not even get in the bare minimum movement that is required to keep your body and joints flexible and healthy.

Her decisions came from the fear of not wanting to be ill, which I understand, but the choices she made to achieve that goal is what I wanted her to question and hope you do too.

Allopathic medicine definitely has its place in the spectrum of miracle recoveries, if we take it for what it is — a stop on the path to wellness and wholeness. I wholeheartedly am grateful for the miracles that allopathic medicine has provided. When viewed as a component of the process of overall health, I think that it serves an important purpose. It’s just a matter of putting it all in the larger perspective and plan, and not abusing the function it serves, or using it for manipulative purposes.

The Truth: About Constipation

Constipation is probably the least understood condition of the body and the most common problem faced today.

The reason I say it is least understood is because while talking with clients about bowel movements and the importance of regular bowel movements, we are on the same page, until I take the plunge and clarify the issue of frequency.

Most people believe that if they pass a bowel movement once every morning they have a healthy digestive system.

Once a day is certainly not the type of regularity naturopathy believes in. The truth is, that going just once is actually a constipated body.

A healthy body must excrete 2 to 3 times a day.

Before you panic on the amount of time you will then have to spend in the bathroom, please understand that a healthy body does not take 15 or 20 minutes to pass a bowel movement. In fact it will take you a total of 20 minutes but spread over 2 to 3 times. So the amount of time spent in the bathroom is the same.

Over and above that it is also important to know that it is very unhealthy to put pressure or sit on the pot for long periods of time reading or playing on your android, because even if you’re not pushing all the time, the position you’re sitting in with your cheeks apart still allows more pressure on the rectal veins causing haemorrhoids.

The problem with bowel habits is that we tend to acquire the bowel habits of our family based on sharing a similar lifestyle and diet. These then form our only real comparison for assessing our own habits.

Talking about habits, how many of you hold the urge to pass bowel movement if out of the house?

You need to realize that by doing that, you have spared your mind of dealing with an unclean toilet, but you haven’t spared your body. What you don’t eliminate hangs around in your bowels and putrefies, creating poisonous gasses, parasites, and destroying your delicate intestinal tissues. An unhealthy colon also leeches out poisons into your blood. This poisonous blood is a tax on your immune system as well as your liver, and when the poisons are collected and sent for excretion, they end up back in your colon, where you reabsorb them.

Bernard Jenson, widely regarded as a leader in the field of Naturopathy, once wrote that “when the bowel is under-active, toxic wastes are more likely to be absorbed through the bowel wall and into the blood stream. The blood then circulates these toxins to every part of the body and deposits some of them in tissues, with the greatest amount retained in the constitutionally weakest tissues.”

It is important you have your facts right on what is more important, an unhygienic toilet or an unhygienic colon. To understand how germs function and how they exist everywhere from public toilets to your own bed, read my article on The Truth: About Germs.

Just like everything else in life where we are taught, that to improve and evolve, you have to work inside out, whether it is mental or spiritual. Likewise in the body, you have to start with keeping your insides clean to have better outwardly health.

A constipated body leads to bad breath, skin eruptions, dark circles and digestive diseases to name a few. It is becoming more and more important in today’s day and age to monitor what we put in, because a lot of it is like eating shit to start with anyways, let alone holding that in for long periods of time.

Common foods that cause constipation:

Meat, fried, oily and junk foods, bread, cakes, pasta, pizzas, burgers, cookies, fats, excessive salt, White flour (maida), biscuits, preserves and white sugar.

The cure for constipation is very simple:

  • Eat lots of FIBRE and drink plenty of WATER.
  • EXERCISE is essential in the treatment of constipation.
  • PEAR is regarded as one of the best laxative fruits.
  • Drinking lukewarm water with lime juice is also a highly effective remedy for constipation.

let it all out, it’s the only way to be  😉

The Truth: About your Immune System

It’s only when you get sick, that you visit your “doctor”. immuned

It’s only when you are healthy, that your doctor visits “you”.

As most correctly believed, a doctor protects your health and heals you. However, a “real doctor” actually visits you every day, every hour and every minute of your life.

You have medical supervision 24/7 and it’s absolutely free.

So it is very important you know who your “real doctor” is to start with.

Asking my patients about how well they understand their immune system, is one of the most important questions on my list.  The reason being, it tells me what and how much they know about their “doctor”.

Your immune system is your “true doctor” at a physical level.

It’s important that you know why I call Your Immune System a doctor?

The immune system is made up of a combination of many organs, specialized proteins, white blood cells, and antibodies.

The immune system is built into man’s body as a line of defense to protect him from being destroyed by an unfriendly environment.

The body’s defenses are skin, mucous membranes, friendly bacteria, tear glands, fever, lymphatic system, fighter cells, and the immune system. The immune system contains about a trillion cells called lymphocytes and about 100 trillion molecules called antibodies. These cells provide protection against.

Your immune system is your doctor that protects you from all microscopic enemies seeking to attack the body

We build our immune system by eating raw food and drinking the juices of raw fruits/vegetables, staying hydrated and exercising!!!

We immobilize our immune system by putting harmful substances into our body!!!

For example:  white table sugar (which is literally a drug), paralyzes the immune system. Just nine teaspoons of sugar (one soda pop contains 10), in a day will immobilize the immune system by about 33%, while approximately 30 teaspoons of sugar will wipe out the immune system from even functioning that day.

High fat intake, white table salt, Alcohol, cigarettes, refined and processed food, Caffeine and basically anything that is made artificially seriously impairs the immune systems functions.

All pharmaceutical drugs and pain killers adversely affect the immune system as well.

So check your own nutrition intake before passing the buck on to germs and virus.

Understanding your health, the food & beverage industry, your body, your environment and medicine is becoming more and more important in today’s world. With regards to health, ignorance is not bliss, it’s painful and immobilizing.

A healthy immune system can keep you from getting the flu, colds, cancer and other illnesses. A healthy diet means a healthy immune system. The better you eat the better you can avoid sickness, and fight it off when you do find yourself down with something. It is extra important for people with immune suppressing illnesses like cancer to eat a healthy diet and exercise every day. Fresh fruits and vegetables are not the only sources of immune boosting nutrients, but they are the best to get your body on the right track to health and wellness.

The Truth: About “Change of Season Flu”

The monsoons are here in Mumbai and everyone seems to be catching the flu. The explanation I am given most times is “it’s in the air.”

The truth is that “IT” meaning germs and virus are always in the air, different types in different seasons, and Nature knows this from the very beginning.

That’s why God/nature/universe whatever you call it, built into man’s body a line of defense to protect him from being destroyed by an unfriendly environment. The body’s defenses are skin, mucous membranes, friendly bacteria, tear glands, fever, lymphatic system, fighter cells, and the immune system. The immune system contains about a trillion cells called lymphocytes and about 100 trillion molecules called antibodies. These cells provide protection against all microscopic enemies seeking to attack the body.

The Truth: It is only when our immune system is down, do we get sick with season change.

So check your own nutrition intake before passing the buck.

Apart from this, what is also important to understand is that all the hype that western medicine has created of a fever being a sickness or a viral infection is untrue.

It is important to understand that sometimes your body needs to fight infections using fever. A fever occurs when the body faces a threat from virus or bacteria and need to eliminate it from your system by killing it. We know that germs growing in cultures die if you turn up the temperature too much. The same is happening in your body when your brain turns up the temperature when you get sick. Getting a fever is an important part of your body’s defense against infection.

“Fever is the doctor at work, not the problem”. Fever is part of the immune system that needs to be complimented with rest and hydration, not supplemented with paracetamols to reduce the fever and antibiotics to kill the germs/virus because that’s exactly what the fever is there to do if you only allow it to.

It’s hard to believe, but for flu the best remedy is EAT LIGHT, REST and HYDRATE.

EAT LIGHT: This is to avoid excess load on the body while it does the healing. Digestion takes up a lot of energy and slows down the healing process. Eat more raw foods and less cooked.

REST: the fact that you feel weak, is your body telling you it has no spare energy to give you, so respect that and stay put in bed for a day or two or three max.

Last but not the least

HYDRATE : It is important to increase fluid intake(fruit/vegetable juices & water) when you have a fever, since it increases evaporation of water from your body and you could get dehydrated, which then further increases the fever causing you to believe that it is out of your control.

Bombay Times Column – FAQ’s Session 6

I am 56-year-old woman weighing 88 kgs. I workout for an hour and a half daily and watch my diet. In spite of that my weight stays the same. Recently my R.A test came positive. I have a problem in my right hand’s second finger, no other medical problem. What diet should I go on?

Currently you need to focus on your arthritis and cure it using a combination of naturopathy (which will give you nutritional guidance)and life force healing(which will give you emotional guidance). Once you start curing that, the weight will also start going. The weight that is refusing to leave you right now is actually protecting you as the body needs fat and water to dilute fat soluble and water soluble toxins.

I am a student and with my daily busy schedule I don’t get much time to exercise. Erratic eating schedules have made me suffer from indigestion and bloating. What healthy snacks can I add to my diet, which are easy to make and carry with me?

I suggest you carry fruits or vegetables that can be eaten easily like apples bananas pears grapes carrots cucumbers etc as well as a bag of mixed dry fruits. You could also carry a boiled egg as it’s easy to peel and eat when ready.  It is unhealthy to keep the stomach empty for long durations, so I suggest you keep nibbling every 2 to 3 hours.

I am a 35-year-old homemaker. After dieting and exercising for a whole year, I have reached my ideal weight. But maintaining that seems tough. Being a south Indian, the food at home is full of vegetables and rice. What should I include and exclude from my diet?

Diets don’t keep excess weight off. A healthy body does. Make sure you are healthy in body and mind. As I do not know what diet you have followed to lose weight, i cannot tell you what to include or exclude. However you could try brown rice instead of white and eat plenty raw foods through the day. Avoid processed foods and unnatural sugars and as for exercising, I suggest you do yoga and walking over any other cardio.

I have heard that vanilla ice-cream is an excellent digestive. Is that true? Will it be a problem if I have it everyday?

First of all, ice cream is a dairy product(dairy is acidic to the body). Secondly, did you know that many conventional and commercial brands of ice cream contain car antifreeze solution? Propylene glycol is an ingredient used in many ice creams. Other additives found in ice cream include Piperonal, Diethyl glucol, Amyl acetate, Aldehyde and many more which are seriously poisonous. Many nutritionists now refer to ice cream as the garbage dump food. Apart from that Ice cream is sweet because of the number one and most addictive drug in the world – sucrose (sugar). Various forms of synthetic chemical sugars and sweetners can be found under such umbrella terms as Sucrol, maltose, dextrose, glucose, saccharin (or Equal), aspartame (or Sweet N Low), and xylitol to name a few. So vanilla ice cream is in NO way an excellent digestive. If you do have digestive problems, I suggest you consult with a specialist and get to the root of what is causing it and alter your lifestyle nutritionally to achieve smooth digestion.

The Truth: About Weight Loss

This article is about me. It is about how I spent years trying to lose weight and most importantly, it is about what I discovered on this journey.

The two most important things I learnt were:

  • “It is your “perception” of weight loss that is the    deciding factor of whether you will succeed in loosing weight permanently or not.”
  • “if being slim/lean and sexy is your goal, your most likely to fail, and even if you do succeed, it carries with it severe health complications which will accentuate, if the weight goes.”

To understand this better; here is how it happened to me:

When I moved to New York I was 52 kilos and my height is 5’4”. Over a period of 5 years, I had gained 30 kilos and was 82 kilos..my struggle to lose weight had started in the 2nd year when I was 64 kilos and I had finally panicked!!

I started off by joining a gym, and decided to eat salads, which to me meant death, but I had to do it, because I couldn’t be fat and not sexy. I believed that the only formula to losing weight was cardio and dieting (which to me meant starvation).

I battled on the inside to suppress cravings. I hated the gym, but I dragged myself there and ruthlessly punished my body trying to burn fat. To deal with this trauma I rewarded my self once a week and ate everything I was not supposed to in excess quantities to feel good. Before I knew it I was 70 kilos by the end of year 3.

Now all I thought of was my fat, I became obsessed with myself and with loosing weight, my life revolved around whether I was looking slim in what I was wearing, making sure everything was hidden, wearing the highest heels to lengthen the thighs, lots of makeup to make myself look sexy and the list goes on and on. Shopping became a task that I dreaded, looking slim was my only goal, and it affected my actions in every sphere of my life.

Anything or anyone that assured me weight loss was my best friend. In sheer desperation I even tried the Atkins diet, GM diet, diet shakes and weight loss pills to only realize that by year 5, I was 82 kilos.

In these 5 years my self esteem and morale had gone to an all time low. I couldn’t find the answers no matter how hard I tried, and this is where I would say karma intervened and as I destined my self to succeed at a subconscious level, I found myself giving up everything I had built in New York to start afresh in India.

It took me 5 years of research and study to finally crack the code. Having practiced all that I have learnt, I have shared it with 100’s of my clients.

Today I offer this to all those out there who want to be healthy slim and fit..

The First most important thing I learnt was:

  • It is your “perception” of weight loss that is the deciding factor of whether you will succeed in losing weight permanently or not.

By this I mean, that if you project constant hatred for your fat body, that’s exactly what you manifest. Read “The secret” or any such book that shows you how the mind works. Basically input=output

The Second most important thing I learnt was:

  • If being slim/lean and sexy is your goal, your most likely to fail, and even if you do succeed temporarily, it carries with it severe health complications which will accentuate over time, if the weight goes.

Vanity is my favorite sin too; however I learnt that the body only accumulates fat and water when the toxicity levels go up in the body. The body does this to protect you not to make you look fat or ugly. Your body loves you no matter what you think of it. The only reason there is a communication gap between you and your body is because the body is too advanced for your understanding and just as the body does not take your permission to circulate blood or make your heart beat. It takes the necessary actions to protect you till the very end.

So the obvious next question is “how do I reduce the toxicity in my body, so that no extra fat and water are required to be stored?”

The Answer to that:

  • Reduce consuming toxic products and toxic food.
  • Get to the root of where the toxicity is building up from.

Apart from toxic foods like packaged meats, processed foods, aerated drinks, pastries, cupcakes, refined oil, white rice, white sugar etc know that most medications, negative thoughts, stress and anxiety cause toxicity to build up as well. When a body is fat, know that it is unhealthy and dis-eased, and requires your serious attention. However it requires your attention to heal not to be vain. And the sooner you accept this reality the sooner you will achieve your goal of being slim.

I know it is difficult to refrain from all toxic foods, and be completely emotionally balanced with no baggage.

However the sooner you start the process, the sooner you will see results. There are a wide variety of great alternative therapies like yoga, naturotherapy, theta, homeopathy, hypnotherapy, life force healing etc that can aid you to start healing your mind body and soul.

Having found my balance with a combination of yoga, nutrition and hypnosis. I achieved a healthy body which in turn made me slim as no healthy body is ever fat!!

Bombay Times Column – FAQ’s Session 5

My husband is 163.5 cms, 40-years-old and weighs 97 kgs. He has been facing acute pain in both his heels recently and finds walking very difficult. What could be the cause of the pain?

Your husband is overweight and needs to start lowering that at the earliest. With regards to the pain, it could be standing in a bad posture that’s putting extra pressure on the heels. However it could also be a nerve problem, so I suggest you have it looked at by a professional.

I am 22 year-old-man, 6’2” and weigh 108 kgs. I have tried several diets but none seem to work. I am also lactose intolerant. Could you suggest a diet that I can follow long-term? Since I am a Keralite, many of the dishes made at home are coconut-based. Where am I going wrong?

I would need a lot more information to suggest a diet however you are not grossly overweight so I suggest you follow the basic principles of eating healthy (lots of raw fruits and vegetables), exercising and staying hydrated. Also ensure that you are not eating a lot of white rice. As for being lactose intolerant; the most effective treatment is to avoid foods and medications that contain lactose, primarily milk and milk products.

I am a 40-year-old man weighing 57 kgs. I’ve been trying to gain weight but have reached a plateau. Can you recommend a diet that will help me gain weight the healthy way?

The information provided is insufficient as I need to not only know your height but I also need to know your current diet to understand why you have reached a plateau. Doing yoga helps you achieve your ideal optimum weight, so I suggest you start  Hatha yoga and see if that helps.

I’d like to know if slaked lime can be used as a calcium supplement. How must it be consumed? Can be added while cooking or had raw? What is the quantity needed for daily supply of calcium? Can slaked lime help preventing/ curing osteoporosis?

I do not recommend slated lime as a calcium supplement. I suggest you get your calcium from natural vegetables, nuts, sesame seeds etc., I suggest you research the internet for natural food sources of calcium as there are too many to put down here. I also suggest you give your body morning sunlight as it is vital for building bones, apart from that I suggest you go yoga and keep your body alkaline by eating healthy as a lifestyle as that is the best way to supply calcium to your body daily.

Bombay Times Column – FAQ’s Session 4

I am a 30 year old married woman weighing 75 kgs. In the last six years I have put on 25 kgs much to my dismay. The culprit is a stressful lifestyle — no exercise, irregular diet, a tiresome job and late sleeping hours. My periods are also irregular periods and I have been diagnosed with cysts in my ovaries. What diet should I follow to lose weight?

You already know the reasons why you have put on weight. The fact is that you have not been able to implement weight loss as you have not been able to implement regular exercise, diet, sleep or lower stress which leads to a healthy body. I suggest you first work with your mind. You could choose from a variety of alternative therapies like naturotherapy, life force therapy, homeopathy, reiki etc as all these practitioners work will help you lower stress and guide you towards finding your balance which in turn will enable you to eat healthy, exercise and lower stress etc. As for the cysts, I suggest you try hypnotherapy, as mostly this is related to birthing blocks and fears.

I am suffering from a number of food allergies. Could you suggest a healthy alternative to milk, nuts and corn? What food should I substitute for wheat?

There are natural Allergy Elimination Techniques which are non-invasive, drug free and a natural solution to alleviate allergies of all types and intensities. These techniques use a blend of selective energy balancing, testing and treatment procedures from acupuncture/acupressure, nutritional, and kinesiological disciplines of medicine where one allergen is treated at a time. I suggest you research this on the internet and work towards clearing your allergies to live a healthier life. As for your question for healthy substitutes; you can have 2 tablespoons Omega3 cold pressed oil instead of nuts. Milk and corn can be avoided as they are very acidic but do research on foods high in calcium and make sure to have calcium every day. Wheat can be substituted with Millet – Great, Sorghum aka Jowar.

I have been told that fasting once a week is a good practise. I try and skip my lunch every Friday (there is an eight to 10 hour gap between my breakfast and lunch). Is this a healthy practice?

An 8 to 10 hour gap is not good between breakfast and lunch. Up to 4 hours is ok.With regards to fasting, there are many types of fasts, I suggest a fast that allows you lots of raw fruits and vegetables all day as it nourishes the body and yet rests the digestive system. Please remember that it is important to rest when you fast.

Is having a jawar roti slightly dipped in oil or ghee good to have at breakfast? Also, I have noticed that when I skip my meals I tend to feel very heavy. Why is that?

Jowar roti is good, a little ghee is ok, if the oil is cold pressed then that’s good too, however its always better to start your morning with a variety of fresh fruits for breakfast and save the roti for later in the day . Without a complete diagnosis I cannot answer your question accurately, I suggest you consult a naturopath or homeopath and understand what’s causing it, to be able to cure it. It is also advisable to not skip meals and eat smaller portions more frequently.
