The Truth: About “Change of Season Flu”

 The monsoons are here in Mumbai and everyone seems to be catching the flu. The explanation I am given most times is “it’s in the air.”

The truth is that “IT” meaning germs and virus are always in the air, different types in different seasons, and Nature knows this from the very beginning.

That’s why God/nature/universe whatever you call it, built into man’s body a line of defense to protect him from being destroyed by an unfriendly environment. The body’s defenses are skin, mucous membranes, friendly bacteria, tear glands, fever, lymphatic system, fighter cells, and the immune system. The immune system contains about a trillion cells called lymphocytes and about 100 trillion molecules called antibodies. These cells provide protection against all microscopic enemies seeking to attack the body.

The Truth: It is only when our immune system is down, do we get sick with season change.

We build our immune system by eating raw food and drinking the juices of raw fruits/vegetables, staying hydrated and exercising!!!

We immobilize our immune system by putting harmful substances into our body!!!

For example:  white table sugar (which is literally a drug), paralyzes the immune system. Just nine teaspoons of sugar (one soda pop contains 10), in a day will immobilize the immune system by about 33%, while approximately 30 teaspoons of sugar will wipe out the immune system from even functioning that day.

High fat intake, white table salt, Alcohol, cigarettes, refined and processed food, Caffeine and basically anything that is made artificially seriously impairs the immune systems functions.

All pharmaceutical drugs and pain killers adversely affect the immune system as well.

So check your own nutrition intake before passing the buck.

Apart from this, what is also important to understand is that all the hype that western medicine has created of a fever being a sickness or a viral infection is untrue.

It is important to understand that sometimes your body needs to fight infections using fever. A fever occurs when the body faces a threat from virus or bacteria and need to eliminate it from your system by killing it. We know that germs growing in cultures die if you turn up the temperature too much. The same is happening in your body when your brain turns up the temperature when you get sick. Getting a fever is an important part of your body’s defense against infection.

“Fever is the doctor at work, not the problem”. Fever is part of the immune system that needs to be complimented with rest and hydration, not supplemented with paracetamols to reduce the fever and antibiotics to kill the germs/virus because that’s exactly what the fever is there to do if you only allow it to.

It’s hard to believe, but for flu the best remedy is EAT LIGHT, REST and HYDRATE.

EAT LIGHT: This is to avoid excess load on the body while it does the healing. Digestion takes up a lot of energy and slows down the healing process. Eat more raw foods and less cooked.

REST: the fact that you feel weak, is your body telling you it has no spare energy to give you, so respect that and stay put in bed for a day or two or three max.

Last but not the least

HYDRATE : It is important to increase fluid intake(fruit/vegetable juices & water) when you have a fever, since it increases evaporation of water from your body and you could get dehydrated, which then further increases the fever causing you to believe that it is out of your control.

The Truth: About Germs

It all started in the mid 18th century.

It was that One crucial debate on “The Germ Theory” between 2 microbiologists Louise Pasteur and Antoine Bechamp that changed the world forever.

Pasteur and Bechamp strongly disagreed in their bacteriological theories and it was this argument that changed the course of Medicine.

Pasteur’s theory was accepted and Bechamp’s theory was rejected. Modern Medicine and True Health parted ways because of this.

Pasteur’s discovery — that most infectious diseases are caused by germs, also known as the “germ theory of disease,” is one of the most important in medical history. His work became the foundation for the science of microbiology, and a cornerstone of modern medicine. Pasteur’s Germ Theory promoted a theory of disease that described non-changeable microbes as the primary cause of disease. This is the theory of monomorphism. This theory says that a microorganism is static and unchangeable. It is what it is. Disease is caused by microbes or bacteria that invade the body from the outside.

Bechamp held the view that microorganisms can go through different stages of development and they can evolve into various growth forms within their life cycle. This is the theory of pleomorphism. He observed microbe like particles in the blood which he called microzymas. These microbes would change shape as individuals became diseased, and for Bechamp, this was the cause of disease; hence disease comes from inside the body.

Bechamp’s research proved, what the root cause of disease was, and how it could be reversed or avoided altogether using safe, natural methods. This was long before the synthetic drugs, chemotherapy, radiation, surgical removal of body parts and vaccines with which we are all so familiar today became the mainstays of mainstream medical treatment. Bechamp’s work showed that the inner condition and health of the cells (sometimes described as the “terrain” in works of the time) determined whether disease would manifest or spread in the body. He proved through rigorous scientific method and repeated experiments over many years that disease was not due to germs attacking the body from the outside, as Louis Pasteur later convinced the world. What you eat, breathe, drink, and bathe in are the primary factors that determine your body’s inner condition. ‘Germs’ arise as a result of a diseased condition. They are a symptom, not the cause.

Western medical science went with Pasteur’s theory and Unfortunately modern medicine or allopathy as we know it, is based on the Pasteur’s germ theory. Since the 1850s, they have been developing new drugs to attack and kill the disease invaders(germs) and the result has been epidemics of cancer, sicknesses and diseases — and a very rich and powerful pharmaceutical industry.

When Pasteur was on his deathbed, he finally acknowledged Bechamp’s work and said, “Bechamp was correct: the microbe is nothing: the terrain is everything.” It was a 180 degree turnaround. With his death imminently at hand, he as much as admitted that his germ theory had flaws. But his admission fell on deaf ears. It was far too late. It could not reverse the inertia of ideas that had already been accepted by mainstream science at that time. Allopathic (drug based) medicine was firmly entrenched on the road that was paved by Pasteur.

Pasteur’s germ theory has actually made us place the responsibility of our health into the hands of poor germs and virus who really mean us no harm.

Germs are everywhere. All living things on Earth are interdependent on other living things, the entire scenario being in a rather fine balance. All forms of life are capable, in varying degrees, of adapting to environmental changes, and germs and viruses have been doing that from time immemorial. They are part of the scenario of life, they have a role to fill and a purpose to serve as part of Nature’s “Grand Design”.

The truth is that germs (bacteria) are everywhere and they are attracted to and proliferate in dis-eased tissues.  Bacteria decompose dead matter.  That is their job. For instance, when a tree dies, bacteria come in and eat the tree and it eventually becomes soil.   Bacteria do not eat a live, healthy tree.  The same thing is true in people — bacteria are attracted to dead matter. Therefore, if you have dead matter in your body, bacteria will come in and get to work decomposing the dead tissue so that it may eventually become soil.

The world has been teeming with bacteria (germs), as micro-organisms form the basis of all other forms of life. They manufacture soil out of rock, destroy unhealthy tissues of plants, man and animals, break down dead tissues to be used again, and actually form an essential part of the body and body functions. The behavior of the various forms of bacteria in the body is dependent on the environment within the body (which should be healthy but very often in humans is not), and it is only when the environment within becomes deteriorated, that many normal bacteria change from a benign form to a pathological form, again as a natural consequence. In Nature it is the survival of the species that counts, and individuals are expendable for the survival of the majority. The weak or sickly in the wild are not tolerated to handicap the group, and one way or another are soon eliminated by predators appointed for the purpose. C’est la vie. So when a person allows a pathological condition of body chemistry to develop within them they should realize that what follows is not a perversity of fate or an unlucky encounter with germs of a criminal nature, but merely another step in a natural sequence of events.

Our medical scientists have succeeded in giving the word “germ” a significance and dread power, ludicrously all out of proportion to the part these organisms actually play in the life processes of the individual human being.

One would imagine, from the way the medical professions speak, that one tiny germ or bacillus (countless thousands of which would scarcely cover the head of a pin) has only to enter the body of a “healthy” individual for that individual to be stricken with some foul disease or other. Perhaps typhoid! Perhaps tuberculosis! And modern man goes around terrified out of his life because of the existence of these tiny creatures which he believes are always threatening him, and which only the most powerful microscope can reveal to his shuddering gaze.

It is time people realise what germs really are, and the role they really do play, if any, in the setting up and development of disease.

We completely ignore the part played by the individual himself in the setting up of disease within his own body, and throw all the emphasis on purely erroneous factors, such as germs.

It is this conditioning that we need to change in our belief systems, as it does not allow us to take our health to the next level.

NO ONE can do harm to your body, but YOU.

Bechamp’s theory placed all of the responsibility of disease prevention on the individual and his lifestyle and if you seriously think about it, it will blow your mind open to a whole new way of living.

The Truth: About Pain

Pain is an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience usually produced by something that injures, or threatens to injure, the body. Although pain is something that we invariably want to escape or to stop, it serves several very important functions.

Pain protects us by triggering a reflexive withdrawal from something damaging before we can suffer further injury, such as when we drop a hot pan before we sustain extensive burns.

It is also a warning system that lets us know when an injury is about to occur: the burning ache in our muscles during extreme exertion warns us to stop using them.

Pain forces us to immobilize or protect an injured part, such as a broken ankle, thus giving it a chance to heal.

Most importantly pain also lets us know when we need to seek medical help, and teaches us what behaviors to avoid in the future.

Understanding this type of Pain is crucial, as this understanding alone can change the way you perceive health.

Pain is your body’s way of communicating with you and protecting you.

It is NOT your enemy or an inconvenience that needs to be eradicated at the earliest.

Pain is a sign from your body saying “please pay attention to me”

Pain is your doctor that is warning you of trouble.

When a message comes into the brain from anywhere in the body, the brain tells the body how to react. For example, if you accidentally touch a hot stove, the nerves in your skin shoot a message of pain to your brain. The brain then sends a message back telling the muscles in your hand to pull away. Luckily, this neurological relay race takes a lot less time than it just took to read about it.

We cannot bear the thought of being sick as it involves pain/discomfort and upsets an already tight schedule, but the only way the body can get your attention is by localizing the area of the problem and indicating it to you through pain.

Did you know that More than 100,000 chemical reactions go on in your brain every second! Among the brain’s many jobs is to be your own chemist. The brain produces more than 50 identified active drugs. Some of these are associated with memory, intelligence, pain, sedatives etc. The human body can release chemical compounds like opiates that can help the body to kill its own pain. Three such groups of chemicals are known as endorphins, Enkephalins and Dynorphins.

Endorphin is the brain’s natural painkiller, and it is 3 times more potent than morphine.

Which only means that if the body creates pain, there is a method to the madness, as it also has its own internal pharmacy to resolve it, the body will reduce the pain once it is assured that it is being looked into and healed.

Acute pain is one which occurs almost immediately upon tissue damage or injury and lasts only a limited time.

A Chronic Pain lasts for weeks, months, or years and is a major source of suffering, disability, and economic loss.

When chronic pain persists, it can be quite destructive. In effect, we make it a disease in itself. We medicate the pain and suppress it without even touching the real cause.

Pharmaceutical pain killers may get you back on track in a short period of time, but over the long run it will cause more harm than good as suppressing with pain killers promote toxicity in our bodies, which in turn causes more Dis-ease, and absolutely no healing is achieved.

Don’t just “Silence” your body, “Listen” to it.

The best approach to pain is to identify the cause and remove it. This should always be the primary goal.

The Truth: About Malaria

If  you think getting Malaria is no fault of yours, and it’s the damn anopheles mosquito’s that causes it….. You are ONLY half right, as  a mosquito only carries the parasites that cause Malaria,  and the parasites can only cause havoc if you let it.

Everything, from the planet to the parasite is created for a purpose, and causing you harm is on no ones list. There are many “parasites” in your body, most of these are symbiotic relationships, meaning that you need them as much as they need you.

In fact, if you were laying on a table and could make all your human cells go away, a perfect 3-D image of your shape would remain in place as there are more foreign cells in your body than human ones.

As you might know by now, I am not a great friend of killings things in the body, including parasites, fungi and bacteria, to do so would leave billions of corpses of organisms behind that would cause more problems than if they were kept alive to do what they are created for – Decomposing waste products and weak or dead cells.

If they are creating havoc in your body, please understand – They are there by Invitation Only!!

For example: The mosquito needs a stagnant pool of water for its life cycle, it does not invade a body of water and make it stagnant.  It finds a body of water that already provides the kind of environment that it can thrive in.

It is the same with all infections in the body, the environment was created first, and so if there is stagnant morbid matter in your body, then the living creatures that need that type of environment will naturally seek it out and thrive in it.

The real cause of malaria, as in case of any other infectious diseases, is wrong eating habits and a faulty lifestyle, which weakens your immunity resulting in the system being clogged with toxin, accumulated systemic refuse and morbid (dead) matter that is just sitting in your body inviting the parasites to come feast.

It is on this soil of toxicity and morbid matter that the malaria parasite breeds.

The liberal use of denatured foods today such as white sugar, white rice, white flour and products made from them, as well as tinned foods, strong tea, coke, Pepsi, tea, coffee and alcoholic beverages, lower the vitality of the system and paves the way for the development of malaria which is caused by a tiny parasite called plasmodium. The parasites grow in the liver of a person for a few days and then enter the bloodstream where they invade the red blood cells. The female anopheles mosquito draws a small quantity of blood containing the parasites, when she bites a person who has malaria. These parasites then pass through several stages of development within the mosquito’s body and finally find their way to its salivary glands. There they lie in wait for an opportunity to enter the bloodstream of the next person. However upon entering the blood stream, if your immune system is firing on all cylinders, the parasites will not stand a chance of survival, let alone multiplying.

As you can see, it is crucial to keep your immune system strong. With the way the planet is headed, many more H1N1 swine flu, dengue fever and malaria parasites are going to be floating around, and you need to be protected from the inside out, not outside in.

A High Fever is the most common procedure carried out by the body for of all types of Malaria and this is done to kill the parasites and cure you naturally. Malaria DOES NOT necessarily require antibiotic treatment. Your body is the most advanced pharmacy in the world, it is important you stimulate it to do the work it is designed to do and heal you naturally, rather than callously supplement it.

Last but not the least use Citronella, as it repels insects such as mosquitoes, black flies, fleas and ticks therefore, preventing its bites. Citronella oil/incense stick is a natural non-toxic alternative to chemical poisonous insect repellents like Good Night and Mortien which contains DEET (N,N-diethyl-3-methylbenzamide). They may prevent malaria but cause other adverse effects like insomnia, muscle cramps, mood disturbances and rashes.

The Truth: About Common Cold

If you catch a cold every time you meet someone with a cold, does NOT make a cold contagious.

Contrary to what most people believe, the truth is that a Cold is NOT contagious. In laboratory experiments, mucus was passed from the nose of an “infected” individual to the nose of healthy ones, and it was found that they could not intentionally transmit the cold.

The truth is a Common Cold is caused mainly by exposure to two types of viruses, Rhinoviruses and Coronaviruses. These viruses are present in the surroundings everywhere, all the time. If the virus is present everywhere, all the time, how come everybody does not have a cold? How come the virus chooses to attack only you or a few?

The real cause of a Cold is the toxic condition of the body brought about by wrong eating habits such as excessive intake of dairy, starch, carbohydrates, junk food, acid-forming foods, lack of sleep, fatigue and allergic disorders of the nose and throat which weaken the immune system, the duration of the cold will depend on the amount of poisons accumulated in the body and the rapidity with which they are expelled.

A cold is nature’s simplest way of expelling toxic waste from the human system.

Most people are also unaware that there is still NO Allopathic cure for  a common cold, because there are more than 200 subtypes of the virus, and it is difficult to tell one type from the other and develop a medicine for each one.

Over-the-counter cold and cough medications sold to adults and children will only kill the symptoms but not the virus. Decongestants and pain relievers offer some symptom relief, but they won’t prevent a cold or shorten its duration, and most have side effects if used for more than a few days.

Prevention is the ONLY way to avoid a common cold. Once attacked, there’s nothing much you can do about it, except rest and wait for it to go. A Cold can be altogether prevented by proper rest, a vitamin-rich diet and Yoga.

The Truth: About Back Aches

Most people suffering from Cervical Spine (Neck) Thoracic Spine (Mid Back) & Lumbar Spine (Lower Back) pain are of the belief that back aches stem from various reasons like bad posture, wearing high heels, an injury, over weight, sedentary lifestyle with no exercise, too much exercise, heavy weight lifting, dancing, pregnancy, stress etc.. But all these reasons are actually NOT the root cause of back aches.

The true ROOT CAUSE of back aches is a WEAK back.

The spine is essentially made up of vertebrae, the vertebrae are made up of bones and bones are essentially made up of calcium.

So the key to a STRONG back is CALCIUM.

Of course wearing high heels is not recommended, a sedentary lifestyle with no exercise or too much exercise or excess weight training is also not good, however if your back is strong, there would be less chances of injury or back ache.

The Spinal anatomy is truly unique in its form and function. It is designed to be incredibly strong, protecting the highly sensitive nerve roots, yet highly flexible, providing for mobility on many different planes.

However for years we have abused our bodies. As you can see, calcium and your back are very closely related.

One of the main causes of a weak back is also the excessive consumption of Coke and Pepsi. They drastically lower calcium levels and increase phosphate levels in the blood. When phosphate levels are high and calcium levels are low, calcium is pulled out of the bones. The phosphate content of soft drinks like Coke and Pepsi are very high, and they contain virtually no calcium.” When you continually eat food cooked in hydrogenated refined oil and iodized salt, processed foods like white bread, sugar and tea/coffee for years on end, your body experiences a state of acidosis.

Acidosis needs to be combated by alkalinity. And where do you think your body finds this Alkalinity?

“Calcium” is Alkaline.

To combat this state of acidosis, it strips calcium from your bones to increase the alkalinity…..This in turn leads to a weak back, leading to injuries and back aches and even osteoporosis.

Massages or Pain killers will only temporarily relieve a back ache.  If you are looking to strengthen your back and not suffer from constant back aches, you need to most importantly focus on your calcium intake. However popping a calcium pill is not the answer, nearly all supplements contain chemicals like stearates and stearic acid which work as lubricants added to raw materials in supplements. They also contain potentially allergenic binders, fillers and often coloring agents. These additives have a number of side effects in the long run, including decreased absorption.

There is no better source of calcium than a well-balanced diet. In principle your daily nutrition should bring in all the calcium your body needs. Supplements will not compensate for junk foods, alcohol, smoking and imbalanced nutrition.

Last but not the least, what is also most effective in healing back aches is the practice of yoga at least twice a week if not more. Yoga does wonders for not just strengthening your back but for your entire being. Yoga not only strengthens your core it calms you down . The Truth: About Colon Cleansing

Colon cleansing is just another “quick-fix”, and unfortunately it’s under the banner of “natural cures” which makes it more appealing to people. It is in NO way natural and good for health.

If selling colon cleansing to cleanse the colon is not enough, today it is also marketed as a weight loss tool.

A colon cleanse claims to cause a “mass of gunk” to come out of you, but the gunk only comes out of the people who take the product, because the gunk is created by the product!

“Colon Cleansing Kits” claim to “remove old accumulated waste” called “mucoid plaque” that is passed from the human body in the form of long, rubbery bowel movements. The rubber like substance that is produced is NOT what was inside of you, but is a direct result of the substance that you took in the colon cleanse product , this “mucoid plaque” is simply the result of ingested powdered psyllium and Bentonite clay, bonding with the natural mucous lining of the intestinal walls. Most of the colon cleanse products today contain Psyillium (metucil) and Methyl cellulose, both are considered to be bulk-producing agents.

What exactly is a bulk producing agent?

Bulk-producing agents cause the stool to be bulkier and to retain more water, as well as forming an emollient gel. These are the two ingredients that make your stools look sludgy and rubbery.

There is a constant danger with bulk producing agents that when they do not have enough water, they can actually worsen constipation and be the cause of  blockage.

As for weight loss “Cleansing” is often used as an intro to a diet program. Claims can include detoxification, internal cleansing and increased weight loss. The truth is that what is generally achieved is a large drop in body weight, much of it is water weight, glycogen or lean tissue, and if that does anything positive, it’s the psychological boost the dieter gets when they see a 2 to 5 kg drop on the scale in the first week or even a few days. This kind of psychological boost could be considered a potential benefit, because some people give up easily with slow progress and are highly motivated with a fast start. But anyone who really understands body composition (lean body mass versus fat mass versus body water) and who has a long-term perspective will not be all that excited about fast weight loss.

The fact is, our bodies are very well designed, whether by an omnipotent Creator or by millennia of evolution, and the colon does it’s job pretty efficiently on its own.

The best way to keep your colon clean is to follow a regular balanced diet with enough of fiber in it. The fiber in your food acts as roughage and helps you in having regular bowel movements. An adult would require 25-30 grams of fiber per day.

Rather than pursue “colon cleansing” schemes, I’d recommend you call it maintaining “healthy digestive processes.”

How is your regular daily fiber intake? Are you getting 25-35 grams of fiber a day, every day, consistently? If not, then why look for “magic in a bottle”, why not just eat better?

The Truth: About FDA

FOOD AND DRUG ADMINISTRATION

Straight from the horse’s mouth: Here is what the  FDA claims their job is:

The FDA is responsible for protecting the public health by assuring the safety, efficacy, and security of human and veterinary drugs, biological products, medical devices, our nation’s food supply, cosmetics, and products that emit radiation. The FDA is also responsible for advancing the public health by helping to speed innovations that make medicines and foods more effective, safer, and more affordable; and helping the public get the accurate, science-based information they need to use medicines and foods to improve their health.

When a lay person reads this, the most normal reaction is to take a sigh of relief and religiously look for FDA approvals on everything you buy.

For no fault of yours, it’s not your forte! You assume that the FDA is the expert and they will take care of our safety when it comes to food.

Well they don’t !!!

I understand that this is an outrageous claim to make, and most of you are probably thinking “now she’s pushing it too far”  but stay with me and I hope to show you’ll what I see.

Lets take macaroni and cheese, as an example, the type you buy (ready to eat) that you get at all super markets across the world.(India Included).

Below is what the FDA labeling says behind each box.

Enriched Macaroni Product (Wheat Flour, Niacin, Ferrous Sulfate [Iron], Thiamin Mononitrate, Riboflavin, Folic Acid, Cheese Sauce Mix (Whey, Modified Food Starch, Whey Protein Concentrate, Cheddar Cheese [Milk, Cheese Culture, Salt, Enzymes], Granular Cheese [Milk, Cheese Culture, Salt, Enzymes], Salt, Calcium Carbonate, Potassium Chloride, Contains Less than 2% of Parmesan Cheese [Part-Skim Milk, Cheese Culture, Salt, Enzymes], Dried Buttermilk, Sodium Tripolyphosphate, Blue Cheese [Milk, Cheese Culture, Salt, Enzymes], Sodium Phosphate, Medium Chain Triglycerides, Cream, Citric Acid, Lactic Acid, Enzymes, Yellow 5, Yellow 6).

Modified food starch is an additive that increases the bulk of a food. Other additives include potassium chloride that are used instead of salt to decrease the sodium level in foods, sodium tripolyphosphate  is used to maintain moisture, Medium Chain Triglycerides is a substitute for regular oil. Artificial colors yellow 5 & 6 have shown to cause neural problems in some children.

How come all this is not mentioned?

Lets assume that they are aware and are monitoring the quantity of additives and preservatives that are being added, and lets say the FDA makes sure, that the food item does not exceed a certain amount of chemicals in it, there by making it safe to consume.

Heres the catch:

FDA safety standards are calculated per serving, so if you eat one serving of anything that is FDA approved, you would be under the danger limit. but if you eat it everyday, which is what most of us do with products like Oil, chips, cookies, chocolates, bread etc

The chemicals start adding up…. slowly and steadily they poison you !!!

Dyes, bleaches, antioxidants, preservatives, chemical flavors, buffers, noxious sprays, alkalizers, acidifiers, deodorants, moisteners, drying agents, expanders, modifiers, emulsifiers, stabilizers, thickeners, clarifiers, disinfectants, defoliants, fungicides, neutralizers, anticaking and antifoaming agents, hydrolyzers, hydrogenators, synthetic hormones, steroids and four thousand other drugs that just make your mouth water with anticipation, are being used extensively so that food can be standardized, stocked and distributed without rotting !!!

It’s all building up and the biggest proof of this, is the general ill-health in society. We have an epidemic of cancer, obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, and many other such ailments today.

The mind surely plays a big role in maintaining optimum health, but so does the food you eat !!

The Truth: About Disease

With most people today, fear of disease is greater than the fear of God and understandably so. I was once a part of “most people”.

The fear of disease comes from the way it is used by health care professionals. The fear of disease comes because we are told that a disease can be fatal. The fear of disease comes when we are made to believe we have no control over it. It’s the feeling of being helpless that creates the fear.

I am not going to focus on the role F&B and Pharmaceutical Industries  play in building this fear, even though it’s a BIG part. I will save that for another article as it’s a topic on its own.

I would rather first tell you what disease really is.

DISEASE is nothing more than DIS-EASE

The very word denoting illness contains its own best definition: dis-ease.

Dis-ease is the earliest stage of illness NOT the last.

Dis-ease is another word for discomfort.

Dis-ease may be defined as a state which is not conducive to inner harmony.

Dis-ease is an energetic imbalance, a shift in your natural vitality that is not beneficial.

It is worth seeing how the Thesaurus defines disease and dis-ease.

Dis-ease is a way your body communicates with you. It is important to perceive words like dis-ease correctly, as these are the foundations to building a healthier body. The truth is, that there is only one disease in today’s world, with many different stages, Modern medicine have given these stages many different names. The final stages of dis-ease are cancer, heart attack, strokes and things like that, but nobody wakes up one morning and suffers from these things without experiencing the beginning stages of disease. What happens is that people don’t identify the beginning stages of disease or ignore it and it keeps coming back worse and worse. If you just listen to your body and take correct actions when you feel slight dis-ease, it will never end up being what you believe is disease.

The Truth: About Calories

This subject is dear to my heart, as I have personally experienced a lifestyle based on calories. Having lived in New York I was totally trapped in the calorie web.. I drank diet coke instead of regular coke, I chose all low-fat, low-calorie products for my kitchen. Every time I looked at food, calories was all I saw.  It was only when I understood nutrition that I saw the light.

India didn’t really face these issues till a few years back, but today our supermarkets are full of low-calorie butters, jams, sugar, oil, milk, cookies, and most people pick up these products with the best of intentions; keeping themselves and their families healthy.

It’s important you understand the origin and root of this. The “The Calorie Myth” is  a brilliant article, and if I were to ever write one, this is how it would be.

THE CALORIE MYTH
The theory of slimming based on the low-calorie approach is without doubt the greatest scientific “fudge” of the twentieth century. It is nothing more than a snare, a deception, a dangerous and simplistic hypothesis, lacking any real scientific basis. And yet it has dictated our eating habits for over half a century. You have only to look around you to see that the more well upholstered, plump, fat or even obese people are, the more religiously they count the calories they consume. With very few exceptions, anything which has passed for a “diet” since the beginning of the century, has essentially been based on the low-calorie theory. How misguided can you be! No serious or long-term success can be achieved from such a method. Not to mention the side effects, which can be devastating. At the end of this chapter I will have more to say on the scandalous sociocultural phenomenon, which has built up around the subject of calories in food. For we have reached a point where what has happened can only be described as mass brainwashing.

THE ORIGINS OF THE CALORIE THEORY
In 1930 two American doctors, Newburgh and Johnson, of the University of Michigan, suggested in one of their papers that ”obesity results from a diet too high in calories, rather than from any metabolic deficiency”. Their study on energy balance was based on very limited data and, above all, had been conducted over too short a period to deserve serious scientific acceptance. This did not prevent their study from being immediately and widely acclaimed as irrefutable scientific truth, and it has been treated as ” gospel” ever since.

A few years later, however, Newburgh and Johnson, concerned at the publicity which had been given to their discovery, somewhat hesitantly published some serious reservations they had concerning their previous findings. These went entirely unnoticed. Their initial theory was already integrated into the syllabus of most Western medical schools, and there it remains to this day.

THE CALORIE THEORY
A calorie is the amount of energy needed to raise the temperature of one gram of water from 14° to 15° centigrade. The human body needs energy, first and foremost to maintain its body temperature at 98.6° Fahrenheit. But as soon as the body is active, it needs extra energy to stand vertical, to move, to speak, and so on. And on top of that yet more energy is needed to eat and digest food and carry out the basic activities of life. The body’s daily energy requirements vary according to the person’s age, sex and individual needs.

The calorie theory is as follows :
If a particular individual needs 2,500 calories a day and consumes only 2,000, a 500 calorie deficit results. To compensate for the deficit, the body will draw on its fat reserves to find an equivalent amount of energy, and weight loss will result.

If, on the other hand, an individual has a daily intake of 3,500 calories when only 2,500 are needed, the excess 1,000 calories will automatically be stored as body fat.

The theory is therefore based on the assumption that there is no loss of energy. It is purely mathematical, drawn directly from Lavoisier’s theory on the laws of thermodynamics.

At this point we may well be wondering how it was that prisoners in Nazi concentration camps managed to survive for almost five years on only 700 to 800 calories a day. If the calorie theory was correct, the prisoners should have died once their body fat was used up in other words, within a few months.

Similarly, we may wonder how people with big appetites who consume 4,000 to 5,000 calories a day are not fatter than they are (some even remain skinny). If the calorie theory was correct, these hearty eaters would come to weigh 60 to 80 stone within a few years. Furthermore, how can you explain why some people continue to put on weight even when they reduce their daily calorie intake by eating less? Thousands of people go on gaining weight like this while starving themselves to death.

THE EXPLANATION
The first question is: When the consumption of calories is reduced, why does weight loss not follow? Actually, weight loss does occur, but only temporarily. This is, in fact, where Newburgh and Johnson went wrong, in that they collected their data over much too short a period of time. The phenomenon works like this:

Suppose that an individual needs 2,500 calories a day and that, over a long period, he consumes accordingly. If, suddenly, the ration of calories drops to 2,000, the body will draw on an equivalent quantity of stored fat to compensate and weight loss will be seen to occur. However, if from now on the daily intake of calories is limited to 2,000, instead of the 2,500 previously consumed, the body’s survival instinct comes into play. It quickly adjusts its energy requirements to match the level of calorie intake: if it is only given 2,000 calories, it will only use up 2,000 calories. Weight loss will quickly cease. But the body does not stop there. Its instinct for survival will lead it to take greater precautions yet, and lay down reserves for possible future need. If from now on it is supplied with 2,000 calories, it will simply reduce its energy needs to, say, 1,700 calories and store the other 300 in the form of body fat.

So this is how we end up achieving the very opposite of the result we were aiming for. Paradoxically, although the subject is eating less, he will gradually put weight back on again.

In practice, the human body, constantly driven by its survival mechanisms, behaves no differently from the starving dog which buries its bone. Despite what we might think, it is when the dog is not fed regularly that it reverts to its inborn instincts and buries its food, saving it for the day when it may otherwise go hungry.

How many of you, I wonder, have fallen victim at one time or other to this unfounded theory of balancing calories? You will certainly have come across obese people who were actually starving themselves to death. This is especially common among women. Psychiatrists’ consulting-rooms are full of women being treated for depression induced by trying to follow such a diet. They have become dependent on this vicious circle, knowing that breaking away from it will only entail putting back on more weight than they have lost.

Most members of the ”medical” profession do not want to know. They do realize their patients are not losing weight, but they put it down to cheating and secret binges. Some slimming professionals even run group therapy sessions, at which members are applauded when they are able to show they have lost weight and made to feel ashamed of any gain. The mental cruelty involved in these practices is positively medieval. Moreover, stipulating a 1500 calorie diet without detailing what it is to contain is quite inadequate. It simply serves to focus on the energy value of foods without taking account of their nutritional value.

Apart from a few specialists, doctors tend to be disinclined to update their understanding of these matters and are usually not knowledgeable about them in the first place. Where nutrition is concerned, they seem to have little scientific understanding going beyond the commonly held views.

What is more, it is not a field in which doctors in general are particularly interested. I have noticed that of the twenty or so I have worked with on this book, all of them, without exception, were originally led to research and experiment in the field because they themselves had a serious weight problem to solve.

What is heart-rending, even scandalous, is the fact that the general public has been allowed to believe that the calorie theory was scientifically proven. It is sad that the theory became accepted and now constitutes one of the basic assumptions of western civilization.

Not a week goes by without one women’s magazine or another splashing an article on slimming. We are presented with the latest menus developed by some team of dietitians, based on the calorie theory and suggesting something along the lines of ”a tangerine for breakfast,  a chick-pea for lunch and an olive in the evening…”

It is amazing how the low-calorie approach has managed to delude people for so long. There are two explanations, though. One is that a low-calorie diet invariably produces a result of sorts. Lack of food, which is the basis of the method, inevitably leads to some loss of weight. But the result, as we have seen, does not last. Not only is a return to square one inevitable, but in most cases more weight is gained than is lost. The second explanation is that ”low calorie” products today constitute a sizeable market sector. Exploitation of the theory, under the guidance of dietary ”experts”, has created such a market that vested interests now have to be contended with, principally those of the food industry and a few misguided chefs.

So the calorie theory is false and now you know why. But that is not the end of it. The theory is so ingrained in your mind that for some time to come you will catch yourself still eating according to its principles.  If this happens, just re-read this article until everything is completely clear to you.

It can be seen that the more the number of permitted calories is reduced, the less effective the diet becomes and the more liable the body is not only to revert to its original weight but also to lay down additional reserves of fat.
